Q & A with Lauren
Tell us what brought you to health coaching
I started working in healthcare as a youth volunteering in a hospital. I continued in a variety of roles and responsibilities. While in graduate school I realized that while it is important to understand and cure disease we all need to better understand how to be healthy and well. This laid the groundwork for me to learn more about what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. I studied many of the leaders in the field and began practicing yoga and meditation.
Tell us more about functional medicine health coaching
I read about Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Jeffrey Bland and functional medicine. The functional medicine approach seeks to find underlying causes of health concerns and determines how lifestyle changes can create improved health and wellness.
Recognizing that lifestyle changes take time and motivation there was a need to have coaches work with functional medicine providers and their clients to make these changes. For this reason, the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy worked with the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) to provide an educational program that was based on the IFM approach along with the best coaching skills to help clients meet their goals.
What is a health coach?
Health coaches support clients as they make positive healthy lifestyle changes. More specifically, the health coach supports and guides you while you discover how to accomplish your goals through small meaningful steps.
Functional Medicine health coaches are trained in the resources utilized by your provider and have the coaching skills to support the implementation of the recommended healthy lifestyle goals. The healthy lifestyle goals include: sleep and relaxation, nutrition as recommended by a functional health care provider, movement and exercise, stress and relationships as it influences health.
Health coaches provide encouragement, support and accountability throughout the process of making changes as you create the healthy life you desire.
What can a client expect when they meet with you?
I will be working closely with Dr. Gosselin understanding your health goals. We will meet a couple times a month by video communication or if preferred, by phone or in person. We will review the the areas of your life where you would like to make healthier choices and discover the best ways to accomplish your goals so they are sustainable for you. Typically, I meet with people for 3 to 6 months and then as often as needed to support them. I look forward to supporting you on your journey towards a healthier life.
